A Thought for Thursday - Lent 2024

Since when has the church been the domain of the right-wing conservative wealthy elite? Since when has the church's action been confined to Sunday mornings? Since when has church been defined as what we do in a special building on Sunday to which only those who consider themselves 'worthy' gain entry? Why is it that some consider themselves the 'owners' of the church and expect that things will only be done their way?

Jesus of Nazareth was a radical peasant preacher who mixed with the lowest outcasts of the community and brought a new worldview of radical unconditional love for all. How far separate is that from the wealthy closed church of today!

When will we learn that being clergy is not a desk job? Our role takes place in the street, in the marketplace and professionally and accountably across the threshold of our people's houses - and of course, over a coffee with those who have no home. That where God is! It is the role of us all to engage with the world on the world's terms.

Peace, justice and blessings to all
